The death of Somu has proved to be an irreparable loss for this family as the whole family was looking towards him for their future survival. The way, both the mother wail the demise of their sons is quite contradictory. This contradiction brings the multiple layers of classdivision of the society on the surface. Sujata, to some extent, is able to hold her feelings in which she has been trained since her childhood whereas Somu’s mother does not know about these complexities and cries uninhibitedly at the loss of her son. With the passage of the time, her plaintive loud crying has turned into sobbing for lifetime. She has to fight with the harsh circumstances of life after the death of her son. Her problems are far deeper than those of Sujata’s life because she has to fight for her survival together with her daughters. For Somu's mother, there is no time to live in the past, a comfort which Sujata can avail. The novel captures the sad realities of the movement and comes face to face with her sense of estrangement from the double standards of bourgeois society to which she belongs

Anandia, a two faced mole of society who came as friend and companion in their mission but was actually the reason of their death, he was part of that feudal community who wanted to uproot the branches of their movement. Mother of 1084 reflects the political and social upheaval of 1970s India, a period marked by the Naxalite movement and state oppression. It highlights the stark contrast between the youth, who seek justice through revolution, and the older generation, who uphold corrupt systems. Through Sujatha’s journey from ignorance to awakening, Mahasweta Devi showcases the silent transformation happening within Indian society—especially among women. The narrative questions the cost of progress and the role of mothers, society, and the state in shaping or destroying revolutionary spirits. The novel paints a powerful picture of India's struggle between tradition and change, indifference and activism.

The experience transforms Sujatha from a passive housewife into a questioning, awakened mother who dares to confront societal norms.

Part IV

Q1. 'Medicine is one area which needs a lot of change'. Substantiate with reference to B.M. Hegde's TED Talk.

In his TED Talk "Change is Life," Dr. B.M. Hegde argues that medicine requires fundamental change because it has become overly dependent on creating fear in patients. He criticizes the practice of doctors profiting from this fear, stating it is unethical to "make money in the sick room". Hegde advocates for a shift away from over-medicating minor illnesses, which can often be cured with simple remedies, and towards a system where a doctor's empathy and ability to build faith in the patient are paramount. He asserts that science must evolve by challenging existing myths rather than repeating known facts.

Q2. Elaborate on Sparsh Shah's love for life and learning.

Sparsh Shah, who was born with Osteogenesis Imperfecta and has suffered over 150 fractures, exhibits a profound love for life through his "unbreakable spirit". He transforms his challenges into a positive message, aiming to show others how to turn "impossible" into "I'm possible".

His passion for learning is demonstrated by his dedication to studying both Hindustani classical and American vocal music, in addition to being a rapper, robotics team member, and inspirational speaker. He confronts his condition with remarkable positivity, following his father's advice to "tell my bones to smile" during a fracture, embodying a spirit of joy and resilience.

Q3. Discuss the emotions associated with motherland as portrayed in Home Coming Son.

The poem "Home Coming Son" portrays the motherland as a sanctuary that evokes deep emotions of belonging, peace, and spiritual renewal. For the protagonist returning from a foreign land where he faced cruelty and alienation, the homeland represents ultimate freedom and acceptance. The motherland is personified as a nurturing entity whose "breath kiss[es] his naked body" and where ancestral spirits welcome him back. This profound connection fosters a powerful sense of cultural identity and pride, making his home the only "paradise" where he can feel whole and free.

Q4. Explain Measurements as a poem about modernity and human values.

Nabakanta Barua's poem "Measurements" is a critique of modern life's materialism and loss of human values, using the metaphor of taking measurements for a garment that is never stitched. The poem depicts a society obsessed with quantifying every aspect of human existence, from body parts to emotions, yet failing to take meaningful action, as captured in the recurring phrase, "We shall think of the stitching later on"[10]. This endless cycle of measuring without purpose illustrates the hollowness, frustration, and futility of modern life, where data replaces empathy[11]. The final poignant question, "When will someone stitch the garment to fit man?" serves as a plea for a more humane world tailored to actual human needs[10][12].

Q2. Draft an informative speech on the need to conserve water.

Open Speech

Good morning, everyone. I want you to think about the most essential element for life on Earth. It's not technology, not money, but water. From the first glass we drink in the morning to the rain that nourishes our crops, water is the silent, constant force that sustains us. Yet, we often treat it as an infinite commodity. The reality is starkly different. While our planet is blue from space, less than 1% of its water is fresh and accessible for our use. This tiny fraction is under immense pressure from a growing global population, increasing industrial demand, and the unpredictable effects of climate change, which are altering rainfall patterns and leading to more frequent droughts and floods.

The consequences of water scarcity are not a distant threat; they are a present-day reality for millions. When we waste water, we contribute to a crisis that dries up rivers, damages ecosystems, and threatens food security as farmers struggle to irrigate their crops. It impacts public health, economic stability, and can even become a source of conflict. Every drop wasted in our homes is a drop that could have sustained a life, grown food, or preserved a vital natural habitat. The ripple effect of our consumption habits travels far beyond our own taps.

The good news is that the solution begins with us, through the simple act of conservation. This isn't about making drastic sacrifices; it's about being mindful. Simple habits like fixing a leaky tap, taking shorter showers, turning off the water while brushing our teeth, and only running full loads in washing machines can collectively save millions of litres of water. By valuing water as the precious, finite resource it is, we not only protect our environment but also ensure a sustainable and water-secure future for generations to come. Let's make every drop count. Thank you.

Q2. Write your experience of visiting a holy place.

Open Text

Of all the spiritual journeys I have undertaken, my visit to the ancient city of Varanasi remains the most profound. Stepping into its labyrinthine lanes felt like walking through a living museum, where time itself seemed to flow differently. The air was a thick tapestry of scents—incense from the countless temples, marigold garlands, and the earthy aroma of the sacred River Ganga. Every turn revealed a new spectacle: saffron-clad sadhus in deep meditation, the constant chime of temple bells, and the vibrant chaos of life unfolding on the ghats, the stone steps leading down to the river. It was a place where the veil between the material and the spiritual felt incredibly thin, a city that breathes faith with every sunrise.

The pinnacle of my experience was witnessing the Ganga Aarti at Dashashwamedh Ghat as dusk settled over the city. Thousands of us—pilgrims, locals, and travellers from across the globe—gathered on the steps and in boats, our faces illuminated by the fading light. As the ceremony began, young priests in saffron robes moved in perfect synchrony, their large, multi-tiered brass lamps painting patterns of fire against the twilight sky. The air filled with the powerful, rhythmic chanting of mantras, the clash of cymbals, and the resonating sound of the conch shell. It was a hypnotic, multisensory spectacle that transcended mere ritual; it felt like a direct conversation with the divine, a collective outpouring of devotion that unified every soul present.

Leaving Varanasi, I carried with me more than just memories; I carried a feeling of deep introspection and peace. To see the cycles of life and death co-existing so openly on the banks of the Ganga was a powerful lesson in acceptance and impermanence. The city is chaotic and overwhelming, yet at its heart lies a profound stillness. It is a place that challenges you, changes you, and ultimately leaves an indelible mark on your soul, reminding you of the deep, unwavering current of faith that flows through the heart of India.

Q3. Draft an article on 'Importance of Blood Donation'.

Open Article

The Lifeline in Your Veins: The Importance of Blood Donation

Every two seconds, someone in the U.S. needs blood. Whether for a patient undergoing surgery, a victim of a traumatic accident, or an individual battling cancer, a blood transfusion can be the difference between life and death. Despite advances in medical technology, blood is a vital resource that cannot be manufactured; it can only come from volunteer donors. This simple, selfless act provides a lifeline in emergencies and offers consistent support for patients with chronic illnesses like sickle cell anemia who require regular transfusions. Yet, with only a small fraction of the eligible population donating annually, blood banks often face shortages, making every donation incredibly valuable.

While the primary motive for donating blood is altruism, the act provides significant health benefits for the donor as well. Before donating, you receive a free mini-health screening that checks your pulse, blood pressure, body temperature, and hemoglobin levels, which can help detect underlying health issues. Furthermore, regular blood donation can improve your cardiovascular health. It helps balance iron levels in the blood, which may reduce the risk of heart attacks by as much as 88% and lower the risk for certain cancers. Donating blood reduces the thickness of your blood, allowing it to flow more easily and lessening the strain on your heart and vascular system.

Beyond the physical benefits, giving blood has a profound impact on your emotional well-being. The act of helping others is linked to reduced stress, a greater sense of belonging, and even a longer life. Knowing that a single donation can save up to three lives provides an unparalleled sense of fulfillment. By giving just an hour of your time, you contribute to a healthier community, close the supply gap, and offer hope to those in critical need.
